Carl Warner

Paris Boulevard創作歷程

Paris Boulevard是Carl Warner在2012年替 Paris cook book festival所作的商業廣告。 先前網站有創作歷程的介紹,現在網頁已移除,只能貼文字讓大家自己看囉!

The Brief
I was asked invited by the president of Gourmand International Edouard Cointreau to create a poster for their forthcoming annual Gourmand World Cookbook Awards in Paris. The scene needed to be made of food of course and feature an iconic image of Paris as well as some kind of book element.

I made a series of sketches and drawings as usual to visualise the composition and these were sent to Edouard for approval. The simplicity of the Eiffel tower and cafe table boulevard caught his eye the most, and so he let me have the freedom of using whatever ingredients I wanted in order to bring the scene to life.

The Shoot
When someone gives me an open brief to do what I like it is often harder than when a brief is more specific, with a product or list of ingredients that need to be featured. I often find that the more constrained we are the more creative we become, as we need to think harder to solve problems or outside the box to overcome challenges.

In this case I decided to constrain my “open” brief, by restricting the ingredients to typically French foods and French food culture. So the cobbled street was made of white butter beans, the pavement was Brie cheese, the roofs of the houses from saucisson and so on.

My first sketch of this scene featured a bottle of fine red wine and a glass on the table top, but despite producing some of the finest wines, champagnes and cognac in the world , the french government don’t allow any form of advertising for alcoholic products or brands and so the foreground cheese table was dressed with a coffee cup. The book element of the poster was made from a bread crust for the cover with pages of cooked ham which is a popular Parisian snack.

But the most impressive part of the image is of course the Eiffel tower, and as I wanted to celebrate the great tradition of french chocolatiers and fine french gateaux it had to be made from confectionary. Having said that, the thing that immediately sprung to mind in order to create the structural aspect of the tower was an old childhood favourite sweet called ‘Curly Wirly’. This was a lattice work of toffee covered in chocolate and was perfect to use in the construction. With sponge cake and raspberries on the first two layers and a muffin at the top, it made for an impressive food model that was lovingly built by Paul Baker, seen here adding the final touches.

The Event
The final image was shown to Edouard and began it’s work of promoting the 2012 Gourmand International World Cook Book Awards, where it was seen on the streets of Paris and as a huge poster outside the book fair that followed the awards.

The image was sent around the world and created more interest in the awards and book fair than any of the previous images used in promoting the event.

I was also delighted to be invited to the book fair where we exhibited the Eiffel tower and a number of other works to a very amused international audience of publishers, food writers and gourmet chefs.
