Named day on the herald
This watercolor is probably painted in 1898 and is included in the book Ett Hem. Here the maid Emma is celebrated on her name day. Carl tells of the painting in Ett Hem: “It was only temporarily they lay on the mansion at the time when Emma’s name day was celebrated by the children with dress, coffee on the bed and congratulations, read by Suzanne, dressed in my coat suit. It is Ulf, dressed as a guy, who carries the coffee tray. The rest of you will probably recognize. It is Johan who is downstairs and plays the violin, so that tears shed like peas on kind Emma.

Born into poverty, Carl Larsson earned a scholarship at the Stockholm Academy of Fine Arts and supported himself in commercial illustration. His career in fine art, in which his ambitions tended toward the monumental and allegorical, was lackluster, but this changed when he met his future wife, artist Karin Berg. Under her influence he began to produce light, bright watercolors, modest in scale and subject. Karin’s father gave the newlyweds a small cottage in the rural village of Sundborn, and as their family expanded, the Larssons lavished energy on remodeling and decorating their home. Carl delighted in rendering the cottage and its inhabitants in loving, lighthearted watercolors that document the family’s idyllic country life.
