二十四節氣 24 Solar Terms

A personal project in 2014. I designed and illustrated animals for the traditional East Asian 24 solar terms.

For each term, I merged the featured vegetable or fruit, or the special environmental changes of that weather into the animal.

Not all the terms has a related animal, and usually several terms share the same vegetables. I tried to select and arrange them for better design and visual diversity.

寒露

HanLu (Cold Dew) | The geese finished their migration in summer; lotus root.

• 鴻雁來賓：《通書》作來濱，濱，水際也，亦通。此時鴻雁排成一字或人字形的隊列大舉南遷。
• 雀入大水為蛤：雀，此為黃雀；大水，海也。古人看到海邊突然出現很多蛤蜊，且貝殼的條紋及顏色與雀鳥相似，便以為是雀鳥變成的。
• 菊有黃華：此時為菊花開放的時節。

鴨子ｘ橄欖ｘ蓮藕ｘ蓮藕

時序已進深秋，《月令七十二候集解》說：「九月節，露氣寒冷，將凝結也。」指寒露時夜晚露水增多氣溫更冷，地面的露水結成霜，需特別留意保暖。「一候鴻雁來賓；二候雀入大水為蛤；三候菊有黃華」，設計圖面以秋季南遷的野鴨為主角，將橄欖葉及蓮藕元素巧妙與鴨身融合，形成一幅帶著滿滿秋意的畫面。

It is late autumn now. The Calendar of Seventy Two Pentads goes, “The dews in September are cold and about to condense.” which means dews increase at night in Cold Dew and temperature decrease even further. Dews on the ground turn into frost. Take special care to stay warm.

The design uses wild duck as the leading character and integrates olive leaf and lotus root elements with its body, presenting an image full of signs of autumn.
